Australian Medical Association’s position statement on marriage ‘equality’ misleading

Australian doctors concerned that the public may be misled by the Australian Medical Association (AMA) 20 May 2017 Position statement on marriage equality have published a critique of the statement, revealing that the position statement was crafted without consulting fully the AMA’s own membership nor the wider medical community.

The July 2017 medical critique, “Misleading the public, Neglecting the child”, accuses the AMA position statement of publicly making unequivocally false claims, such as that there is no peer-reviewed evidence of “poorer health or psychosocial outcomes” for children raised in same-sex parented families, while privately admitting that in fact there is evidence to show that same-sex parented families lead to¬†detrimental outcomes for children.

In suppressing evidence unfavourable to the cause of those lobbying for the introduction of same-sex ‘marriage’, the critique charges the AMA of “choosing ideology over science”, with the children and families set to suffer the most if the definition of marriage, and all the societal¬†institutions, norms and laws that flow from this definition that has underpinned healthy societies worldwide for millennia, were to be changed.
