ABS-CBN accused of swindling the president of the Philippines Rodrigo Duterte

DAVAO – On April 10th, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, during his speech at a press briefing at Davao International Airport prior to his departure for Saudi Arabia for a two-day state visit, accused corporate media giant ABS-CBN of a serious crime – Estafa.

Estafa is akin to swindling or fraud. Under the The Revised Penal Code of the Philippines, Act No. 3815, Art. 315, “any person who shall accept any compensation given him under the belief that it was in payment of services rendered or labor performed by him, when in fact he did not actually perform such services or labor” can be charged with¬†estafa.

It is a serious crime punishable by imprisonment.

According to the president, when he was leading the polls in the last days of the 2016 presidential election campaign, he started receiving more funds from supporters for his campaign that, up to that point, had been largely underfunded. He used this money to buy airtime from ABS-CBN, but the media giant did not broadcast his campaign messages, thus failing to meet its obligation under the law.

ABS-CBN has not released an official statement denying the president’s allegation of estafa.
