So glad you’re back- the Force awakens

An opening symphonic flourish. Yellow text receding slowly across a broad screen, A starry sky in an endless universe punctuated by a craft that inevitably gets bigger and bigger, and even bigger still. Yes, after 10 long years (even longer if I, II and III are to you an unfortunate aberration best forgotten), the Star Wars saga is back, and not a moment too soon as far as I’m concerned.

My expectations were high, like any long-term fan’s. Though the director’s chair was occupied by a different person that the one responsible for three of my favourite movies of all time, I was reassured at the outset by the familiar presence of beloved characters from the original trilogy, as well as key creatives such as Lawrence Kasdan, Kathleen Kennedy and John Williams, who have been involved with this iconic series from the beginning.

As things turned out, my expectations were not disappointed; in fact, I was completely blown away. Watching The Force Awakens took me right back to the beloved universe of Episode IV, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. The Force Awakens  had all the longed-for touchstones from the first trilogy and masterfully connected them to new characters and stories for the next generation of Star Wars fans. The Force Awakens kept my glued to the screen, muscles tensed at the fast-paced action, mind intrigued at the unfolding mysteries. More than that, the movie packs an emotional punch that I was entirely unprepared for, yet was reminiscent of the classic original trilogy.

I know I’ll have to, but I can hardly wait for the next installments of my favourite movie saga. The Force is definitely strong with this one.
